Short-term Study

Kobe University to National University of Laos

Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies

Ms. SUGITA Sayo

I participated in a one-month short-term program in Laos from August 17 to September 14. During the first week, I attended intensive lectures at the Faculty of Economics, National University of Laos. These sessions not only helped me gain knowledge about the Lao economy but also allowed me to exchange opinions with professors and students from Korea University who joined the program.

During the second and third weeks, I interned at the Ministry of Education and Sports, where I learned about educational policies through discussions with various departments. A highlight was visiting the Nam Ngum Dam, which deepened my research on hydropower.

Additionally, I visited international organizations such as JICA, ADB, and UNICEF, which offered experiences I could not have had without this program. On weekends, Ministry staff warmly guided us around Vientiane and even to the Blue Lagoon in Vang Vieng, making the time both educational and enjoyable.

In the final week, I visited various schools ranging from public secondary schools to private kindergartens and high schools. With the support of the Japanese Embassy in Laos, I also had the chance to meet Kansai Electric Power staff working at Nam Ngiep 1 Company.

Throughout the program, I deeply appreciated the kindness and cooperation of so many people—from Ministry officials and international organizations to the Embassy and power company staff. I am also grateful to my fellow GSICS and Korea University students for their support in both study and daily life. This one-month stay in Laos was not only academically meaningful but also an inspiring opportunity to experience the warmth of people. I hope to make use of this experience not only for my Master’s thesis but also in my future career and life.
