In November 2024, I had an opportunity to visit The Tsunami/Storm Surge Disaster Prevention Station in Osaka. The field tour was oriented by Dr. Nakahara and 8 students joined this field tour.
The Tsunami/Storm Surge Disaster Prevention Station showcased the history and damage caused by three typhoons in the tidal Surge disaster tunnel, advanced disaster preparedness strategies, including early warning systems, evacuation procedures, and community education initiatives. It highlighted how technology and public awareness work together to mitigate the risks of natural disasters like tsunamis and storm surges.
This field tour taught me the importance of proactive measures, such as well-maintained seawalls and evacuation drills, in saving lives by looking at diagrams and videos, listening, and touching. This experience has motivated me to consider how similar strategies could be adapted and applied in my home country to improve disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and evacuation procedures.
