Photocatalytic Materials for Environmental Purification and Energy Conversion

Light-induced catalysis using semiconductor nanomaterials and solar light is considered as an ultimate solution to address the challenges concerning sustainable energy and sustainable environment. Despite the so far tremendous number of studies in this field, photocatalysis remains somewhat separate from real-world applications. This challenge is mainly related to complex materials design and process upscaling. This can be mitigated on the one hand by optimizing photo-catalytically active materials of low cost, nontoxicity, high stability against photocorrosion, and easily scalable to fulfill the needs for industrial applications. This lecture will review our research from fundamental aspects of charge carrier processes to developing efficient photocatalysis systems. Processing of photocatalytic nanomaterials from a sustainability perspective will be reviewed. It will be shown how natural resources, plant extracts, plant waste and plastic waste, can be employed in the synthesis of photocatalytically active nanomaterials. In addition, green processing techniques such as sonochemical and microwave are also promising methods to be reviewed here.
