GNP Co-hosted an International Seminar on “Building a Career at the World Bank: Pathways, Skills, and Personal Insights"

On October 5, 2026, the seminar “Building a Career at the World Bank: Pathways, Skills, and Personal Insights,” co-organized by the Global Network Program, was held in a hybrid format. The seminar featured Dr. Roberta Malee Bassett, Global Lead for Tertiary Education and Senior Education Specialist at the World Bank Group.

Dr. Bassett first provided an overview of the institutions that comprise the World Bank Group and their respective roles. She then introduced the principal pathways for building a career within the organization, including the Young Professionals Program (YPP), Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Program, internships, fellowships, and extended-term appointments. She explained the target applicants, eligibility requirements, recruitment schedules, and nature of the work associated with each pathway, emphasizing the importance of gathering information and preparing for these opportunities while still enrolled as a student.

The seminar also addressed the qualifications and competencies sought by the World Bank Group. In addition to having a clearly defined area of expertise, candidates need practical experience in developing countries, data analysis skills, the ability to prepare policy documents and reports, and communication skills for working with diverse stakeholders. Dr. Bassett also offered practical advice on the application process, including the importance of highlighting concrete achievements rather than merely listing responsibilities on a CV, tailoring application materials to the relevant unit and position, and preparing for competency-based interviews and technical assessments.

Drawing on her own career experience, Dr. Bassett explained that careers in international organizations do not necessarily follow a linear path. She stressed the importance of first developing expertise in a specific field and then broadening one’s knowledge and professional experience. She also highlighted the value of gaining field experience in developing countries and building relationships with mentors and professional networks, which can lead to new opportunities and career advancement.

A total of 66 students and faculty members participated in the seminar, including 30 in person and 36 online. During the question-and-answer session, participants raised a wide range of questions about how to apply for the World Bank Group’s recruitment programs, the expertise and experience students should develop while at university, and the preparations required to pursue a career in an international organization. Dr. Bassett reiterated the importance of establishing a clear area of specialization while expanding one’s knowledge and practical experience in related fields, gaining field experience in developing countries, monitoring recruitment opportunities from an early stage, and connecting with alumni and professionals working in the field. The seminar provided participants with a valuable opportunity to learn about the diverse career pathways available within the World Bank Group and to gain practical insights into the expertise, experience, and preparation required to pursue a career in an international organization.
