GNP Hosted Global Network Seminar “ASINAMANZI: FLUID REALITIES — Exploring South Africa’s Water Crisis and Social Dynamics”
On February 19, 2025, the Global Network Seminar was held, and the seminar welcomed Mr. Minga Kongo, Senior Lecturer and Interim MPHIL Programme Director at the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town. The seminar featured a Book Launch Event celebrating the publication of his book, Asinamanzi: Fluid Realities – Exploring South Africa’s Water Crisis and Social Dynamics.
In his presentation, Mr. Kongo examined South Africa’s ongoing water crisis, with a particular focus on water scarcity in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. He explained how water shortages intersect with other pressing social challenges, including energy shortages, inflation, and unemployment, and discussed the ways in which these overlapping issues shape people's everyday lives and social relationships.
Drawing on the perspectives of “incompleteness” and “conviviality,” which form the conceptual foundation of his book, Mr. Kongo explored how communities experience water insecurity and the various strategies and forms of resilience they employ to cope with limited access to water. He also emphasized that the water crisis extends beyond questions of infrastructure and resource management, highlighting its close connections with healthcare, ecology, spirituality, politics, and many other dimensions of everyday life.
The seminar provided participants with a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of the realities of South Africa’s water crisis while reflecting on the social inequalities surrounding access to water and the complex relationships between water, society, and culture.
