GNP Hosted Global Network Seminar “Securing the first permanent academic position in the UK: a neuroscientist’s perspective”

On July 14, 2025, the Global Network Seminar was held, and the seminar welcomed Dr. Han Wang, Lecturer at the University of Roehampton, as the guest speaker. Dr. Wang delivered a lecture on academic careers in the United Kingdom and shared insights into building a successful research career.

The lecture began with an overview of the highly competitive academic job market in the UK. Dr. Wang explained that earning a doctoral degree does not necessarily lead to a permanent academic position and emphasized the importance of considering a wide range of career options, including opportunities outside academia, from an early stage of one's career planning.

Drawing on his own experience, Dr. Wang then described how he expanded his research interests from linguistics to cognitive neuroscience and eventually secured a permanent academic position in the UK. He highlighted the importance of developing an interdisciplinary research profile, as well as acquiring transferable skills such as mathematics, statistics, and programming that are valuable across multiple research fields. He also shared practical advice on building international research networks and actively applying for research grants and fellowship opportunities as essential steps in developing an academic career.

In addition, Dr. Wang emphasized that successful applications for academic positions require not only a strong record of past research achievements but also a clear vision for future research. He explained the importance of presenting a well-defined research agenda and demonstrating the potential academic and societal impact of one's research.

During the question-and-answer session, participants engaged in lively discussions on topics such as how to build connections with researchers from different disciplines, how to develop opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, and how experience gained in industry can contribute to an academic career.

The seminar provided participants with a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of academic careers in the United Kingdom. It also offered practical insights into developing interdisciplinary expertise, transferable research skills, and international research networks, encouraging participants to reflect on their own research activities and future career development.
