Approach, Verification and Evaluation
@「Theme-based research」
In the lessons of
Theme-based research I, students will work in groups and cultivate their basic
research skills. In theme-based research II and III lessons, students will
research their theme individually, and prepare their thesis including an English
summary, and will make a presentation of their research. Through these
activities, students will deepen their understanding regarding global security.
A「Global Action Programs」
We improve more of the
students’ research abilities, and communicate with students from home and
abroad and guide them to hold workshops and forums to present their research
results.
B「School-designed Subjects to Support the Theme-based
Research」
In order to perform
students’ theme-based research at a higher level, our school provides “International
Understanding” and “ESD (Education for Sustainable Development)” as
school-designed subjects in our school curriculum.
1)About Theme-based Research
Studies of Theme-based Research is divided into 3 parts in one year. First, students will learn the
basics of research by reading “Research Literacy for University students”
written by Takeshi Yamada and Hajimu Hayashi. This book is basically for the
university students, so it is quite complicating for the 4th
graders. So teachers will make a worksheet for better understanding.
Second, we made
opportunity to study outside school. We take all students to Kobe University
Library to find materials, and librarian advised the students how to find
specialized book. Also we visited companies presenting Kobe to learn about
disaster and reconstruction, global society. We visited Hakutsuru, Nestle
Japan, COOP Kobe, Kinden, Kawano.
Third, we made the students to do a research basing on their interest.
Students will be advised how to improve their research. They will do poster
session for mid-report, make a report of 6000 letters and do a presentation.
This is to make them ready for the Theme-based research they will do in 5th
and 6th grade. To load the theme of their research, they chose the
keyword from 18 topics such as global security, international conflict, peace
and collaboration, earthquake disaster and reconstruction. This is to make
their theme clear and to know what they should do.
Students loads their
theme from 4 areas (Disaster Reconstruction and Risk Management, International
city Kobe and World Culture, Change International Conflict to Peace and
Collaboration, Global Science and Kobe as a Regional Core City). Since we
loaded the 4areas too quickly, there were some research that did not meet the 4
areas, but it was excused. Teachers took care of 3-9 students whose theme was
similar. Each research were done by their own, they will need to make a
graduation report in 18000 letters.
To instruct, students did a presentation once in 2-3 months and also wrote
a mid-report. Students did a discussion to deepen their research.
The students from grad school of Kobe University was there as a TA. They
instructed the students report and also how to improve their report.
